Bohus Fortress is located on the Göta River, a place where Swedish, Norwegian and Danish history meets. Already in the 13th century, the royal powers realized the importance of controlling this strategic location. In the 1250s, the Norwegian king Håkon V Magnusson built a fortification on Ragnhildsholmen to protect the city of Kongahälla. But it was not until 1308 that the first version of Bohus saw the light of day – then as a simple wooden castle on Bagaholmen, which would later develop into the mighty stone fortress we see today.

For more than 300 years, the fortress was expanded and strengthened by Norwegian and Danish kings, especially during the reign of Christian IV. During this period, Danish kings ruled over Norway, and Bohus became one of the most important defensive installations in Scandinavia.

But Bohus was not just a military fortress – it was also an administrative center, a trading post and a royal residence. Decisions were made here that affected the entire region, and the fortress became a symbol of power and stability in a time of constant conflict.

Bohus Fortress has survived 14 sieges but has never been conquered. Perhaps the most dramatic siege occurred in 1678 during the Scanian War, when 15,000 Danish and Norwegian soldiers attacked the fortress for two months. However, the 800 Swedish and Finnish defenders held out until Swedish reinforcements arrived. The battle was brutal, and when the smoke cleared, Bohus still stood firm.

One of the most spectacular events in the fortress's history occurred in 1566 during the Nordic Seven Years' War. Swedish besiegers managed to enter the fortress and hoist the Swedish flag on the Red Tower. But then the Norwegian defenders set fire to a gunpowder store, resulting in a huge explosion that hurled the Swedes high into the air. A relief on the sarcophagus of the Danish king Frederick II in Roskilde Cathedral immortalizes this dramatic event.

Did you know that Bohus Fortress was more than just a military bastion? It also served as a feared prison for almost 500 years. From the 14th century until the end of the 18th century, it housed both political prisoners and common criminals.

The prison at Bohus was a place where the condemned had to endure harsh conditions and brutal punishments. There were pillories, gallows and dark, damp dungeons. Some of the most notorious prisoners were the so-called “Bohuslän thieves”, who were often subjected to horrific punishments. After the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, Bohuslän became Swedish, and the fortress's strategic importance slowly began to decline. In the 18th century, Bohus was mostly used as a prison, and in 1786 it was abandoned by the Swedish military. Two years later, during the so-called "Theatre War", the fortress was temporarily invaded by Danish-Norwegian troops, which made the Swedes realize that an abandoned fortress could be a risk. In 1789, Gustav III decided to demolish the fortress, but fortunately further destruction was stopped by Carl XIV Johan in 1838 for cultural-historical reasons.

Extensive restoration work was carried out in the 20th century to preserve the fortress's historical heritage. Today, you can wander through its impressive ruins and imagine what life was once like behind its thick walls.
