From war scene to symbol of peace

The new Älvsborg Fortress was built as a response to the constant Danish threat to Sweden in the 17th century. The previous Älvsborg Fortress had played an important role in the wars between Sweden and Denmark, but was in dire need of reinforcement.

In 1644, the Danes had succeeded in blocking the entrance to the Göta Älv by capturing Kyrkogårdsholmen. However, thanks to Dutch help, the Swedes were able to drive the enemy away and then decided to build a new, modern fortress to protect Gothenburg's port. Work began in 1653 under the leadership of Quartermaster General Johan Wärnschiöld, and it took a full 24 years before the construction was completed in 1677.

The fortress was strategically located to protect the entrance to Gothenburg and came to play a crucial role during several conflicts. During the Great Northern War in 1719, it was subjected to a massive bombardment by the Danish fleet, but the fortress held its ground, despite extensive damage. Over time, however, the fortress lost its military significance and ceased to be considered an active defense facility in 1868.

The fortress as a prison

During its active period as a defensive structure, Nya Älvsborg Fortress also functioned as a prison. Between the late 18th century and 1866, many convicted criminals were housed here, and at most there were over 100 prisoners in the fortress at any one time. Most were sentenced to penal servitude and had to work hard under difficult conditions.

The harsh environment and isolated location of the fortress made it a difficult place to escape from, making it an effective prison for criminals of the time. Today, visitors can wander through the old prison cells and get a glimpse into what life as a prisoner at the fortress might have been like.

From military defense to popular excursion destination

After the fortress lost its military function at the end of the 19th century, it was used for a time as a storage and barracks, including during World War I. But since 1971, Nya Älvsborg Fortress has been a popular tourist destination and a living part of Gothenburg's cultural heritage.

Today, visitors can reach the fortress by boat from central Gothenburg and experience the powerful atmosphere of the place. Here, you can wander through the historic buildings, explore the cannon batteries, visit the museum and enjoy the fantastic views of the archipelago.

During the summer months, a number of exciting events are held at the fortress. Visitors can take part in guided tours where knowledgeable guides bring history to life with captivating stories about wars, prisoners and everyday life at the fortress through the ages.

The fortress is open to visitors during the summer months, and boats depart regularly from Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg. There is a restaurant and café on site where you can enjoy a bite to eat in the historic setting.
