From defense to cultural heritage

The Södra Strandverket was the last reinforcement of the defense of the Marstrand harbor entrance. It replaced older cannon batteries and was equipped with a total of 46 cannons. With a crew of 170 soldiers, it was an important part of the kingdom's defense until 1882, when both the Strandverket and Carlsten Fortress were removed from the fixed defense.

After the military was decommissioned, Strandverket has had many functions. From being a paint factory and emergency shelter to housing the fire department and sailing courses, the building has constantly adapted to the needs of the community. Since 2012, the building has also functioned as an art gallery, and the cultural heritage lives on in a completely new way.
