Pater Noster – A home on the horizonx

On a barren cliff in the open sea off Marstrand, the iconic Pater Noster lighthouse rises, once a lifesaver for sailors, today one of Sweden's most unique tourist attractions. Here, on the island of Hamneskär, winds and waves have shaped a place that attracts adventurous travelers from all over the world.

From sailors' terror to tourist paradise

During the 19th century, the waters around Harmenskär a dreaded trap for sailors. Fog often lay thick over Marstrand and the old mirror lighthouse at Carlsten Fortress was inadequate to guide ships safely into port. In 1867 the first lighthouse keepers moved out to the island and Pater Noster became one of the most important lighthouses along the Swedish west coast. The 32-meter-high Heidenstam lighthouse could be seen twenty nautical miles away and was first powered by kerosene before being electrified in 1953. In 1977 the lighthouse was extinguished and replaced by Hätteberget Lighthouse, but Pater Noster was given new life when it was returned to its original location in 2007 after extensive renovation.

Video about the Pater Noster

Words and text are of course good, but images and moving videos often say so much more. We don't have a good video ourselves, but we have included a video that illustrates the Pater Noster in a good way. So thank you Jörgen Poteta for your

A unique tourist destination

After standing empty for decades, Pater Noster has been transformed into an international destination. With the concept “A home on the horizon” Entrepreneur Mirja Lilja Hagsjö and her team have created a place where the wings of history meet modern luxury. Visitors can now stay in the old lighthouse keeper's quarters, enjoy locally caught food and experience the rugged archipelago nature up close.

Accommodation at the lighthouse

Pater Noster offers a total of 21 beds for overnight guests. The old lighthouse keeper's quarters, on Harmenskär, has been lovingly restored, retaining its maritime charm while adding modern comforts. A special suite in the old baker's cottage provides a unique living experience where the sea is the only thing visible on the horizon.

Food and drink – a taste of the sea

The food served at Pater Noster is inspired by the island's history and surroundings. Fresh fish and shellfish are caught in the waters around Hamneskär, the bread is baked on site and seaweed is served in various forms. The drinks are carefully selected with a focus on local producers, and the water served is desalinated directly from the sea.

Activities and experiences

For those who want to explore more than just the island's history, there are a variety of activities to participate in:

  • Guided tour of the lighthouse – Learn more about the lighthouse's history and enjoy an unbeatable view.
  • Sea fishing – Experience fishing trips where you can catch your own dinner.
  • Seaweed safari – Discover the superfood of the sea and learn how seaweed can be used in cooking.
  • Conference in the Mistlur House – An inspiring environment for meetings and team building.
  • Culture and art – There are plans to use the old powder house as an artist's studio and writing studio.

A challenging but magical place

Running a hotel on an island with no fixed connection to the mainland comes with its challenges. The weather often dictates who can come and go, and in severe weather, guests can stay longer than planned. But for most, that’s part of the charm – truly living on nature’s terms, just like the lighthouse keepers once did.

Award-winning international destination

Since opening, Pater Noster has won several awards, including the prestigious Gold Key Award for an exceptional hotel experience. It has also been recognized by international media and listed as one of the world's most unique destinations.

Visit the Pater Noster

To get to Pater Noster, you need a boat trip from Marstrand or Tjörn. Visitors can arrive by their own boat or book transport through the facility. Whether you want to stay for the day, stay overnight or arrange a conference, Pater Noster offers an experience beyond the ordinary.

Here, in the middle of the open sea, a place where time and space blur awaits – a home on the horizon.
